Earthquake Survival, Earthquake Facts & Earthquake Tips

An earthquake is a sudden tremor or movement of the earth’s crust, which originates on the earths surface or just below it.  The earth is made of several plates, large areas of crust which floats on the mantle.  Since these plates are free to slowly move, they can drift towards each other, away from each other or slide past each other.  Many of the earthquakes which we feel are located in the areas where plates collide or try to slide past each other.

Types of Earthquakes are; Tectonic Earthquake, Volcanic Earthquake, Collapse Earthquake and Explosion Earthquake.

On average 50,000 perceptible earthquakes occur each year (those of magnitude 3.0 or higher) that’s 137 everyday and about 120 earthquakes every year are destructive (magnitude 6.0 or higher).

Mother Nature definitely has a mind of her own and even if you live in a low risk area, it is still important to prepare.

If an earthquake strikes, protect yourself immediately from falling objects; pictures, light fixtures, tall furniture, appliances and breaking glass.  Hide under a heavy object if possible; hang on while still protecting your head, face & neck.  You should take cover in 3 seconds!  The safest place when an earthquake strikes is lie on the floor in the fetal position, beside the bed or the couch.  Contrary to popular belief the doorway is NOT a safe place, chances are you could be seriously hurt or killed by a collapse.

If you are outdoors when an earthquake strikes, get into the open, away from buildings, power lines, chimneys or anything that may fall on you.

If you are driving when an earthquake strikes – stop; try to get out of the traffic first, if possible.  Do NOT stop under a bridge or overpass, under trees or power lines, light standards, traffic lights or signs.  Stay in your car until the shaking stops, if you do decide to continue driving after the earthquake, take caution of breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks, fallen power lines or bridge structures that may be unstable from the earthquake.

Driving in mountainous areas; watch for falling rocks, trees and landslides.

If on the beach, move to higher ground, as an earthquake can cause tsunamis.

After an earthquake check for gas leaks and do NOT use any open flame until you are absolutely sure you have no gas line damage and hazardous gas leaking into the house.
